What’s this website about?
I am an avid traveller, and having spent years in China I got to explore a good chunk of the country. When travelling a country that’s SO big, having experienced insight can save you a lot of time and money. So, I’ve made this website to make navigating China a little easier, with suggested itineraries, blogposts and discussions.
First time in China?
Language: The majority of China speaks Mandarin. You will find Cantonese speakers in the south, in places like Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau. Provinces and rural areas have their own dialects, with some having simply altered vocabulary and pronunciation, and others sounding like a different language entirely.
Currency: Renminbi (RMB)
Money forms: China mostly uses digital forms of payment. Before arriving, attempt to connect your bank card to Alipay and/or Wechat. This isn’t guaranteed to work but if it does, it’ll make your life easier! If it doesn’t, cash is of course still accepted, though maybe with confusion. Certain cities require cash for public transport, so have some coins handy regardless.
Electrical plugs: China uses type A, C and I outlets and operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz.
Safety: China is hands down one of the safest countries in the world. This is particularly good news for female/solo travellers. You will also rarely encounter tourist scams (but as always, have your wits about you).
Navigation: Maps.me for Google/Android phones and Apple Maps for iPhones.
Museums: Museums and art galleries are generally shut on Mondays in China as it is a common rest day.
